Celebrating Women's History Month

Let's pause for a moment and recall the amazing women in our lives. I think of my dad's mother, my first-grade teacher, a pastor's wife from my childhood church, my mom and her lifelong friends, and my aunt. I also celebrate my amazing colleagues and friends who make history, break barriers, and show future generations what is possible. I look at my nieces, and I'm encouraged by how they will shape history. These are just the women I know. There are so many historical women to celebrate as well.

Most of us would agree that we are who we are and have accomplished what we have through women's love, support, and contributions.

Who do you want to celebrate this month?

Managing Our Triggers

Have you ever reacted to a situation, conversation, or headline so fast that you didn't even realize how you reacted until it was over? I can get triggered easily, especially in today's environment, whether it be a clickbait headline designed to elicit negative emotions, a loaded word used in conversation, or a reminder of a prior unpleasant experience. My brain's flight or fight response can be lightning-quick.

Twenty years ago, I attended a workshop where we explored triggers and their negative impacts on ourselves, our colleagues, and our reputation. We learned how to work to build space to notice the trigger, breathe, and then choose how to respond. It was game-changing for my personal and professional life. I'm not an expert or perfect, but every time I notice and pause, I have a choice. I can choose how to respond.

I recall a particular colleague who would push my buttons with virtually every interaction. While I wasn't alone in the struggle to work with this person, I struggled to keep my cool and would often respond unproductively. A leader told me that my responses were noticeable and "wasn't a good look." I remember being angry. Here's a disruptive and challenging employee, and I'm the one who has to change! Looking back, I appreciate the leader and their feedback. It was the nudge I needed to focus on this trigger and figure out a better response. If you want to hear how I reframed this trigger into a fun game, join me on March 18th for our next free webinar, Managing Triggers.
