May Newsletter 2024

Welcome to our new format!

I recently attended a coaching masterclass led by Laura Berman Fortgang, who said, "There are three ways to get your message out: teaching, speaking, and writing."

I love teaching and speaking, and I don't love writing. I put pressure on myself that each piece needs to be deep and meaningful, and it causes stress and anxiety! Yet, newsletters are a proven way to connect with your followers and potential and current clients. After discussing with my colleagues and a coach, I've decided to pivot and try a different approach and see how it resonates with you and me. I will continue to post a short blog each week, and then the monthly newsletter will be a digest of the previous month's blog posts, plus some highlights of what I'm reading or listening to. So, please provide honest feedback!

Wellness & Leadership

We can't go anywhere (in real life or online) without being inundated with "wellness" content—influencers, products, etc. I used to think my overall wellness wasn't related to my career. My perspective has completely changed. Years ago, I started focusing on my nutrition and sleep before big presentations and meetings. I then explored breathing and meditation, blocking 10-15 minutes before controversial or brutal meetings. From there, I worked on movement and sleep hygiene. All this to say, I am convinced, both from my personal experience and the data available, that our overall wellness is intimately tied to our leadership and career performance and success.

What does Wellness mean to me?

I break wellness into three categories:

Physical Health (movement, exercise & nutrition)

Mental & Emotional Health (mindfulness, stress management, relationships & social capacity)

Spiritual Health (for me, this is my Christian faith; for you, it could be something outside of religion).

Over the last 18 months, I've been working on building habits in each of the three categories.

Physical: I strength train 3x a week and get 8500 steps daily (on average). I'm starting to tackle nutrition by tracking protein and sugar consumption.

Mental and Emotional: I have developed a habit and rhythm to manage my overall capacity and commitments. Utilizing The Miracle Morning app, I practice mindfulness through prayer or meditation daily. I'm working on investing in relationships that matter to me. I have also met with a therapist as well as a business coach.

Spiritual: I've shared that I am a fan of the Lectio 365 app, and this year, I am embarking on reading the Bible in a year using this plan.

This habit stacking across categories has yielded significant results. I am stronger and more mobile, I've reigned in some metabolic markers that were trending in the wrong direction, and I have more energy, peace, and presence.

Have you considered the relationship between wellness and your career? Is this of interest to you? Would you like to see more content in this domain? Let me know!
